The Activist Research Network is an informal collaborative initiative among researchers primarily, but not exclusively based in Finland.
Created in 2017, the network is an initiative to promote dialogue and collaboration among researchers in different career stages and disciplines who work with politically engaged research. Its main goal is to bring together – as a network of mutual support – Finland-based researchers of different disciplines, nationalities, ethnicities and career stages to (a) reflect on their own research experiences and (b) discuss key publications on the theme.
Another goal of the network is to increase interdisciplinary dialogue concerning ethical, methodological and theoretical issues concerning research on social movements and activism. We are especially focused on challenges while conducting research on sensitive sociopolitical affairs and underprivileged social groups.
Some of our founding questions are:
- How can my research be scientifically rigorous while also contributing to human rights and progressive social change?
- How can we conduct collaborative rather than exploitative research?
- How to balance between my role as an activist and as a researcher?
- Am I an activist researcher (applying research for political purposes) or a researcher doing activism (independently of what I research)?
- How to pursue a career in an increasingly competitive academia with respect and without silencing underprivileged voices?
Rather than becoming a bureaucratized association, the Activist Research Network is meant to continue being an informal and open space for mutual support and knowledge exchange so that we all can improve as researchers in our own fields. At the same time, we also want to occupy scholarly spaces to discuss methodologies, ethics and politically engaged practices as researchers.
With that in mind, the main channel of communication of the network is its mailing list. Its purpose is to share key information about events and publications related to "activist research". Since its foundation, we have also mobilized members of the Activist Research Network to present their work in seminars and conference panels (ex.: Sociology Days, ETMU Days).
The language of communication in the mailing list is English. If announcements are to be made in other languages, the sender must briefly explain the content of the message in English (one paragraph is enough).
If you would like to join the network, you can subscribe to the mailing list for free.
If you would like to propose talks, seminars, conference panels and other activities, feel free to email the Activist Research Network coordinators:
